Regarding climate week, the mayors of several cities around the world met in New York to discuss and share policies and strategies for the environment.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London and President of C-40, led this first dialogue between leaders where counterparts from cities such as Milan, Rio de Janeiro and, of course, the host city of New York were present.
For his part, Mayor Eric Adams shared with his colleagues some actions that our city has been adopting to reach the goal of carbon neutrality or zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
These include greener schools, for example, 100 percent of educational centers running on electricity instead of gas. Or that, for example, building constructions are made with sustainable materials.
The meeting was led by C-40, a global network made up of the mayors of leading cities and whose purpose is to alleviate the climate crisis.
We spoke with one of the C-40 organizers about the importance of this meeting:
“Mayors have a super important role, they have the ability to, for example, direct the transportation system. To see, for example, what food schools serve; where they get their energy, how they have created green spaces. They have a lot of ability to influence what happens in a city,” said Andrea Fernández, director of Financing, Research and Alliances C-40.
“By taking this local action we can not only reduce emissions, but we can create cities that are more resilient to these effects, we can create green jobs,” added Fernández.
Some New York citizens also shared their opinions with us:
“It is very important because it is affecting the farms a lot and many poor people are suffering a lot from, it is not raining, they do not have water, so it is very important that the heads of countries can do something to change the directions forward,” said James Francois. Pijuan.
“Where it wasn’t snowing, it is snowing. And where it is snow, in truth, it is going down,” added José Pichardo. “What we have to do our part is us, not the politicians, ourselves.”
On September 20, the United Nations will hold its Climate Ambition Summit where several mayors from around the world will participate.
