A group of 54 migrants in a situation, including several children, arrived in New York this Friday morning after being sent on a bus by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, an action that the administration of his counterpart, Eric Adams called it a “cruel political game.”
The information was confirmed to EFE by the commissioner of the city’s Office of Migrant Affairs (MOIA), Manuel Castro, who also explained that the people arrived at the Port Authority station, and also rejected the action: “To It’s cruel for the governor to use people for political issues.”
Nobody expects them. Castro explained that “many of the migrants with whom we have spoken did not know what was happening. They arrive in New York and do not know what to do. Some have families and stay with them,” but most go to the shelter system.
Full shelters. The New York authorities assure that all the people who arrived in the city this Friday are of Latin American origin and join the more than 4,000 migrants from different countries who arrived in the last two months and who are in shelters.
- People from Honduras, Venezuela and Bolivia arrived on this trip, who told Castro that they want to stay in New York and get a job.
- In the group there was a girl who had to be taken to the hospital as she needed insulin and did not receive that medication for several days.
- Mentioning the local mandate for the right to housing, the official said that if there is no space left in the shelters, people will be sent to hotels with which New York has contracts.
A fund for migrants. On Monday there will be a meeting with the New York delegation in the US Congress; there will be discussed the demand for funds made by the city to attend to the migrants sent by Abbott.
- “We need the support of the federal government, we already have 4,000 in the shelter system and all because of a governor who is playing with the lives of these people,” Castro assured.
The immigration situation in New York has led Mayor Adams to announce that on August 1st he will make an emergency declaration that will allow service providers and shelters for migrants to be quickly contracted.
