When animals are severely emaciated, eventually the fat tissue in the body will be broken down in the attempt to get energy. The fat on the heart is among the last to turn into a jelly-like mass. This was a slaughterhouse discovered on some of Fridtjof Bjerke’s cows in 2017, according to a judgment from Sør-Gudbrandsdal District Court.
The year before, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority had gone on an unannounced inspection at Bjerke’s farm at Tretten in Øyer municipality. Inside they found that some of the animals were standing in their own dung. Calves lacked a dry or soft place to lie down.
