A sunny autumn day in Kiel, the air is filled with the salty scent of the sea, and an inconspicuous event causes excitement in the city. Last Tuesday, a young lady, still completely inexperienced in the ways of the state capital, entered the venerable Kiel town hall – not knowing that she would become a minor celebrity today. Kimberly Jones, 18 years old, had just moved from charming Osnabrück to the pretty Ringstrasse in Kiel two days ago to make her training dreams come true.
50 euros welcome money for the new Kiel resident
But what the enthusiastic newcomer didn’t realize was that her reception at Kiel’s town hall would by no means be an everyday occurrence. Surprised by a whirlwind of cameras, microphones and curious faces, she was catapulted into the center of attention. Journalists besieged them, but the charismatic mayor Ulf Kampf himself also welcomed the 250,000th Kiel resident. With a beaming smile, he presented her with a fresh bouquet of flowers, a keel cup and a generous 50 euros in welcome money.
