Mayor Pieter van Maaren van Zaltbommel has provisionally transferred his duties in the field of enforcing the rules in his municipality to an alderman. He does this after a renovation of his home during which the mayor violated the rules.
At the beginning of this month it became clear that CDA member Van Maaren had had the windows and frames of his monumental house replaced without a permit. The house in the Gelderland town has the status of a national monument. This means that nothing about the appearance of the house should be changed.
According to the monument committee, the mayor had been given permission to install rear windows so that the monument would not be damaged. Instead, he had new double-glazed frames installed and the old frames were removed.
Integrity issue
The mayor himself said he was bummed and called it a mistake that he wants to try to correct, but according to the monuments committee, Van Maaren knowingly had the windows replaced without a permit and there is an integrity issue, writes Omroep Gelderland.
The city council decided in a closed meeting last week that an integrity investigation was not necessary. The monument committee in Zaltbommel has submitted an integrity report to the province of Gelderland. The matter has also been reported to the Public Prosecution Service, but it is not clear who did this.
The municipal council will decide later whether Van Maaren will still receive a permit for his renovation. The council must also decide whether the report on the closed meeting should be made public.
