WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday that she has tested positive for COVID-19 and “will be working from home while following isolation protocols.”
In a series of tweets, Bowser said he took a test Wednesday after experiencing “flu-like” symptoms. He later confirmed the positive results with a PCR test.
Bowser, 49, was elected in 2014 and will run for a third term this year. Ella’s older sister Mercia died of complications from COVID-19 in February 2021 at age 64.
A small outbreak of the disease is taking place in high political circles in Washington after Saturday’s dinner at the Gridiron Club. More than a dozen attendees at the event — including two cabinet members, journalists and lawmakers — have tested positive.
City Hall said Bowser did not attend the dinner.
Pandemic numbers in Washington have risen slowly over the past month but are far from reaching the January peak of the omicron variant, and Bowser has lifted most restrictions in the capital.
