Tampa –
Going fishing with his family, the Mayor of Tampa, Florida couldn’t fish, but instead found an object weighing 70 pounds or about 31 kg. Turns out it was cocaine.
The Mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, was on a boat in the Florida Keys. Then her brother found a black package floating in the water, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Castor, who has decades of experience as a police officer, immediately knows what this stuff is, ‘cocaine’.
Reported from Insider, Sunday (12/8/2023), United States border patrol officials announced the discovery on Monday (24/7) and stated that it was found by a recreational sailor. It is estimated that 31 kg of cocaine is worth 1.1 million USD.
A photo shows 25 cocaine bricks stamped with a butterfly label. Just on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times revealed that the sailors in question were the mayor and his family.
After the news broke, Castor retweeted the announcement using a laughing emoji over the article identifying his family’s involvement.
Castor told the Tampa Bay Times that he saved the package’s location on his watch and pulled it into his boat. The package, about the size of a microwave, contains tightly packed cocaine bricks.
His office told CNN that he later reported the find to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which then turned the drugs over to the Border Patrol.
“Thanks to the efforts of this good Samaritan, 70 pounds of cocaine is in federal custody and off our streets,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Adam Hoffner.
The Miami Herald reported on July 24 that the cocaine, which Castor did not identify, was the fifth floating packet of drugs found off the coast of the Keys that month.
The Tampa Bay Times reported there were also 87 pounds of marijuana, 62 pounds of cocaine and at least two bales of marijuana.
The Office of Castor and US Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
