Cuban filmmaker Lilo Vilaplana denounced that the current mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, took advantage of his film Plantadas to promote herself.
In the midst of the campaign for the county mayoral elections, Levine, who is seeking re-election, organized an event dedicated to former Cuban political prisoners, which took place at the Ermita de la Caridad.
Vilaplana points out that the politician took advantage of the success of her most recent film, which deals in a raw and realistic way with the abuses of the Cuban dictatorship towards its opposition prisoners, and has enjoyed great success in Miami and abroad.
“What a coincidence that the elections are approaching and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, holds an act using the success of the film PLANTADAS, which neither she nor Mr. Giron (The one who attends cinema in the city) SUPPORTED,” he began Vilaplana in its networks.
In that sense, he recalled that the official did not support the film project financially or in any other way, and that the political prisoners of the Island were not previously given visibility, disqualifying the use of the suffering of the prisoners to gain political advantage. .
“I remind the Mayor that there are also former Plantados prisoners, and other groups of anti-Castro fighters, who also deserve recognition. I have never seen the mayor attend any event with Cuban exiles, now that the elections are approaching she chooses the most visible group, the PLANTADAS.”
The director of El Caballo pointed out that the former political prisoners themselves recognize that Plantadas has been their first sign of recognition in exile, and regretted that none of those involved in the creation of the film have been considered in the event.
“Said by the prisoners themselves, ‘they had never been taken care of in exile, their only recognition has been the film we made at the initiative of the anti-communist fighter Reinol Rodríguez’, who was not invited to this event either,” he said.
The filmmaker concluded by questioning what the mayor’s true support has been for the victims of Castroism, indicating that the political activist Reinol Rodríguez, producer of Plantadas, has allocated money from the profits of his film to the former prisoners.
“Mr. Reinol has given more than $50,000 of the profits from the film PLANTADAS to political prisoners. I want to know if yesterday they gave any help to the former Cuban political prisoners, or was it just a political event using the PLANTADAS? Freedom for Cuban political prisoners, Down with the dictatorship! Long live Cuba! “He concluded.
The truth is that in the events related to the film, Vilaplana has included not only the former prisoners who inspired the story, but also those involved in its financing, in addition to seeking a constant and current denunciation of the situation in Cuba.
Cubans are the largest migrant group in Miami-Dade County, and constitute a majority percentage of the population, which is why they are the main target of political campaigns.
