A Polish judge has sentenced the murderer of Pawel Adamowicz, then mayor of Gdansk, to life in prison. The perpetrator stabbed the popular politician at a charity gathering in the Polish port city in early 2019. The crime shocked the population and also received a lot of attention in Europe.
The judge sentenced the 30-year-old man to life imprisonment “without the possibility of parole for 40 years” on Thursday. “He committed a murder that has no equal in Poland’s post-war history,” the judge said during the televised hearing.
The man, a soldier, used a 27-centimeter knife in his attack. Tens of thousands of people witnessed the attack, either on the spot or on television. Before his arrest, the man stood on stage for a while to shout something to spectators.
The perpetrator has never expressed remorse. His lawyer said he is considering an appeal, but has not yet made a decision.
