MEXICO CITY (apro).- A frequent customer of designs by Carolina Herrera, Ralph Laurent, Donna Karan NY, Hugo Boss, Versace, Armani and Dolce and Gabbana, the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas, promised not to buy clothes for three months and donate his salary for that period to support the victims of Hurricane “Otis” in Guerrero.
In addition, he postponed all Day of the Dead celebrations and festivals in the district he governs because he considered “that it is not correct that we are celebrating when another part of our country is suffering (…) there will be time to celebrate.”
On her X network account, the alliance member published a video in which she announced these measures of alleged sacrifice:
“I am not going to donate three days of my salary. I am going to donate three months of my salary. I’m going to stop buying clothes for three months, because you know I love buying clothes, to send blankets for the children with all my love. “I’m going to send wheelchairs for older adults and I’m also going to send some gifts for the boys and girls.”
Cuevas Nieves announced that he will send a considerable group of volunteers: “This issue is not about showing off our name or our political party, we must help from the heart.”
For that reason, he explained that his volunteers will not carry his name or a political party badge: “The Cuauhtémoc team will be identified with a t-shirt and a cap with the following reading ‘Mexico beautiful and dear, we are all Warriors’” .
The candidate for the candidacy of the “Va por la CDMX” alliance for the Head of Government of the capital, added that a collection center was installed on the esplanade of the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office. And she said that all donations that arrive will be sent to Acapulco on November 4. Then, she made a general call to those who want to contribute to that cause.
Cuevas Nieves’ announcement came two days after the head of Government, Martí Batres Guadarrama, reported – on Saturday the 28th – that he and other senior officials in his cabinet will donate three days of salary to support those affected by “Otis”. :
He said: “Starting with the head of Government and continuing with the secretaries, undersecretaries, coordinators, general directors, executive directors and area directors.”
Hurricane “Otis” reached the Guerrero coast early Wednesday, October 25, with an intensity of category 5, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and fully impacted the tourist city of Acapulco.
In its devastating path it left – so far – a toll of 45 dead and 47 people missing, as reported this Monday by the state governor, Evelyn Salgado.
