Mayor Michelle Wu’s Plan to Address the Intersecting Crises at Mass. and Cass Boulevard in Boston

A day after the Boston City Council approved a new Mass. and Cass ordinance, Mayor Michelle Wu said she will address how the city will respond to the “intersecting crises” in the area of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue.

Wu is expected to speak at about 9 a.m. at City Hall. She will be joined by other city officials, including Police Commissioner Michael Cox.

After months of debate, the Boston City Council approved Mayor Michelle Wu’s proposal to clean up Mass. and Cass.

The new ordinance is an amended version of a previous proposal from Wu. It will allow Boston police to remove the tents in the troubled Mass. and Cass area only after the people living in them have been offered assistance.

The ordinance also eliminates fines, adds daily checks on the number of beds available and forces the city to offer transportation to shelters.

Councilors Erin Murphy, Frank Baker, Ed Flynn and Michael Flaherty signed the letter, asking that the Boston Public Health Commission take a vote to declare a state of emergency at their Sept. 13 meeting. The councilors believe that would provide more flexibility to the ongoing situation in that area.

City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo voted against his own version of the amended ordinance Wednesday, along with Councilors Kendra Lara and Frank Baker.

The ordinance will take effect a week after the mayor signs it.
