Mayor Karpenisi’s letter for the energy community – 2024-08-04 18:59:33

The aim of the project is to save around 500,000 euros per year, reducing energy costs and boosting sustainable development. The Mayor emphasizes that the project does not serve private interests, but aims at energy self-sufficiency and economic benefits for the local community. In addition, it is committed to consider every proposal for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) based on the interests of the local economy and the environment.

Historical Review and Composition of the Community

The Energy Community consists of the Municipality of Karpenisi (40%), the Municipality of Makrakomi (40%) and the Primary and Secondary School Committees of the two Municipalities, as well as EKEPPPADIK (20%). After the abolition of the above legal entities, their percentage will be taken over by the Municipality of Agrafon. The establishment of the community was approved unanimously with resolution no. 32/2022 decision of the Municipal Council.

Current Developments and Challenges

With the assumption of the new municipal authority of the Municipality of Karpenisi, an extensive review of the project took place. It was concluded that any modification of the plan would have significant consequences for the citizens, as leaving the community would mean a loss of opportunities to reduce energy costs. The change in location of the photovoltaic plant was considered extremely unsafe, since DEDDIE might not approve new connection conditions.

Economic and Social Benefit

The installation of the photovoltaic plant is expected to offer significant economic benefits. In particular, the Municipality’s energy costs have increased dramatically, reaching 900,000 euros in 2023. With the implementation of the project, savings of approximately half a million euros are expected per year, which will allow the reduction of municipal fees and the strengthening of vulnerable households.

Outlook for RES and Local Economy

The municipal authority assured that it will carefully examine every proposal for the construction of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), based on the interests of the local community and the environment. However, a negative attitude was expressed towards large private RES investments that do not provide benefit to the local community.

Conclusions and Commitments

The Mayor of Karpenisi, Christos Kakavas, emphasized that the project of the Energy Community does not serve private interests, but aims to improve the quality of life of the citizens. The municipal authority is committed to making all decisions transparently and remaining open to suggestions and criticism from the community.

The Municipality of Karpenisi invites all citizens to participate in the open dialogue, in order to achieve the best possible solutions for the local community and the environment.
