Mayor Harald Preuner and 18 local councilors are leaving
The 37th meeting was also the last of the local council in this expiring term of office. Mayor Harald Preuner led through the agenda in his usual professional manner and then thanked 18 local councilors who will no longer be members of the committee in the new term of office.
25 years: Mayor Preuner takes stock
In his farewell speech, Harald Preuner took stock after 25 years on the local council, including seven as mayor. The outgoing city leader reflected in detail on the tension between direct democracy and civic engagement. He emphasized that a critical “no” often receives attention more quickly than constructive suggestions for significant and sensible innovations. Preuner encouraged the future local council to address this issue. Civic engagement should help advance the city’s development and not block important major projects for selfish reasons. Challenges such as promoting sustainable mobility in particular require a supra-regional solution strategy. He appealed to the new local council not to be discouraged by a possible “no”. Preuner has served the city as mayor since 2017 and leaves behind a financially sound and livable city that has proven to be extremely resilient to crises in recent years. On behalf of the approximately 3,000 employees of the city administration, whose indispensable work ensures that the city runs smoothly, he thanked Magdalena Baumgartner and the entire team from the local council office for their commitment to political meeting management.
Local councilor Haller thanked the outgoing ÖVP club chairman, Christoph Fuchs, with a small book entitled “Fuchs 8” (author: George Saunders). With his departure, the local council is losing a proven expert (“smart fox”) in the areas of planning and construction, who did not shy away from conflict when necessary. She recalled tough but constructive discussions, especially with the former planning councilor Johann Padutsch. Christoph Fuchs was visibly moved and admitted that he normally prefers to read reports rather than books, but that he would miss the factual discourse on the content level. With a wink, Fuchs promised to read the book as an exception.
