In July, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks said the announcement was coming and they were leaning toward “banning cell phones.”
Adams said at a news conference that New York City was a “one-off” and that while there would be “some action,” the school district was not yet ready for a total ban.
“We’re not there yet,” Adams said. “We have to do it right.”
The mayor noted that the devices are attracting a lot of attention and that some schools have already banned cell phones.
“We’re addicted to our cell phones,” Adams said. “We want to do it right. We want to remove any distractions from our classes.”
Adams said there will be some kind of action in the next school year, but everything still needs to be evaluated, including the opinion of parents, because there is a big concern about being able to stay in touch. with their children.
On Wednesday, students return to classes at several schools, including those in Stamford, Connecticut. Some Long Island students are even returning today.
Additionally, while most Long Island districts begin after Labor Day, some students return Wednesday and others begin this week, such as those in the Jericho area and Suffolk County.
