Mayor Halsema is shocked by the murder of rapper Bigidagoe and the explosions in the city that are probably related to it. “This is unacceptable,” said Halsema in Het Conversation with the Mayor on AT5.
On Friday, Halsema visited residents of the building on Populierenweg in Oost that was hit by an explosion earlier this week, which may be related to the murder of Bigidagoe. The impact damaged the facade of the building and residents will not be able to return to their homes for the time being. They are now staying in a hotel. “This includes a family with very small children,” says Halsema. “The antisocial, irresponsible behavior of the young people who cause these explosions is unacceptable.”
“People carrying out these explosions don’t seem to realize that a child could have been murdered here,” she continues. “That is what you have on your conscience. That is unacceptable.”
Rap music
The murder of Bigidagoe has renewed discussion about the role of rap music, which sometimes glorifies violence. Halsema: “I think it is very important that you continue to make a distinction between rap and crime. We have many rappers who rap about violence and crime, without taking the step. Many rappers live in an environment where there is a lot of violence or crime. Then it may very well be that you convert that into music. But you also have rappers who make the transition to crime, and they must be tracked down and prosecuted. Bigidagoe was part of that and we have more like that.”
According to Halsema, the popularity of rappers such as Bigidagoe and JoeyAK should ‘in no way become an excuse’ for the crimes they have committed. “It is of course worrying that there are young people who condone that crime and say: well, it wasn’t that bad after all. You now see that happening on the internet. And that is really very bad.”
