Mayor Eric Adams Restores $80 Million to Summer Rising Programs After November Cuts

The announcement made by Mayor Eric Adams this Friday restores the cuts that were made in November to summer rising programs.

“I am happy that we will be able to restore funding and invest city money in the programs that help children succeed so much,” the mayor said.

“Through responsible fiscal management, we can restore $10 million in funding for 170 community schools and permanently fund Summer Rising with $80 million.

“Investing in young people through @NYCSchools and @NYCYouth is an investment in our future,” the mayor also wrote in a message on social networks.

Cuts that negatively impacted schools, especially middle schools, reducing attendance days from 5 to 4, as well as summer program hours.

The mayor restores $80 million to the summer program for public school students, which begins in July.

This money is added to the funds of the Department of Youth and Community Development, in the amount of 120 million dollars, plus the 80 million announced today.

“In total 200 million dollars to serve our youth during the summer, so that they have a place to go, so that parents have the peace of mind and spiritual that their children are taking advantage of the summer to continue what they learned during the year during the summer, and so they can then rest easy and know that their children are safe and healthy and learning during the summer,” said Ana Almanzar, vice mayor of strategic initiatives.

This is the mayor’s third announcement to restore funding to different city agencies, which were cut from the budget due in part to the focus on immigrant services.

“More than 69 thousand people are still in charge of the city, with the new stay rules for immigrants we have been able to stabilize the system a little, however, it is still a serious expense that affects our city,” added the mayor.

City officials have indicated that the mayor has restored nearly $200 million for the Fire, Sanitation and now Education Departments.

“This is a tremendous victory for our families, the ‘summer rising’ program is one of the most successful in our education system,” said David Banks, Chancellor of Education.

“It is the commitment that the mayor has with the entire community of New York, specifically the Hispanic community. Poor communities that never receive or have not always received all the resources that they may have,” added Almanzar.

Next Tuesday, the mayor is expected to announce the executive budget that includes cuts in spending on immigrants seeking asylum.
