Mayor Eric Adams Explores Migrant Crisis in Latin America and its Impact on New York City

Mayor Eric Adams completed his fourth day in Latin America this Saturday, with a visit to Bogotá as well as the Darién Gap, which connects Colombia with Panama and is one of the most dangerous points that thousands of migrants cross seeking to reach US soil. .

Area resident Elizabeth Quesada says:

“Many come here and don’t really know what the situation is like, so whether he goes there or informs them directly what is happening, I believe that when they come here they will be aware of what can happen.” .

The objective of these visits, as the mayor himself has reported, has been to learn first-hand about the situation of migrants, strengthen ties with local and national leaders, and dissuade asylum seekers from arriving in New York with the message of that the city’s resources are being exhausted and that there is not room for everyone.

Adams traveled to Mexico on Wednesday, holding meetings with Mexican officials and visiting migrant shelters.

On Friday, he arrived in Ecuador where he said he learned that many asylum seekers from that country arrived in the United States only to realize that they had been deceived that they would get work immediately.

There are conflicting opinions about the need for the local president to travel to these countries. Here in Jackson Heights we spoke with several residents and this is what they expressed:

Fanny Mejía believes that “they are going to spend money that they don’t have to. And here we need it and they take it away from us, social security.”

“I hope that during his visit he will give the President of the United States an idea of how he should help prevent them from coming and support the states further, so that there is a better economy within the support system between states,” adds José Pérez. .

On the other hand, Alexis Andrews doesn’t think she should have gone.

“The mayor, he has a lot of problems here. Why does he have to travel south?”

Since the spring of last year, more than 120 thousand asylum seekers from various countries have arrived in our city. About 40 percent of these immigrants are from Venezuela.

It is expected that upon his return the Mayor will share the conclusions of his trip.
