The goal of Housing First, which is supported by the state capital, is to place homeless people in permanent housing.
The Housing First Düsseldorf eV association, founded in October 2021, takes homeless people off the streets and places them in permanent housing. The state capital Düsseldorf is supporting this project with three positions for social workers to supervise the project. After a two-year test phase, these have now been permanently anchored in the city budget in 2024. At the same time, the association managed to rent out an apartment for the 50th time.
As part of a press event, Housing First board member Hubert Ostendorf and project manager Alexandra Didszun in the presence of Housing First patron Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller takes stock of the last two years in one of the rented apartments.
Mayor Dr. Stephen Keller. “For the 50th time, Housing First has succeeded in helping a person out of homelessness. I think that’s great. I warmly congratulate everyone involved in this success. I’m pleased that we as a city can contribute to this by financing the planned positions “To ensure the work of the association in the future and to enable people to live a self-determined life in dignity.”
Miriam Koch, head of the department for culture and integration and responsible for the accommodation of homeless people who live on the streets, Housing First tenant Volker K., the club members and landlords Patrick Weiß and Isabel Busch as well as the social worker Alena Hansen, who works in the project, also accepted attended this appointment and were available to answer questions.
Housing First aims to permanently end street homelessness. Homeless people receive an apartment with their own rental agreement right at the beginning of the assistance process. Further help is determined individually and in close support with social workers.
The apartments are acquired through cooperation with the street magazine fiftyfifty, housing associations and private investors. The commitment of private landlords is particularly noteworthy. More than a third of the housing stock already comes from them by purchasing the residential units or making existing living space available.
Housing First board member Hubert Ostendorf is also happy and adds: “50 apartments within this short period of time is a huge success. But we are still at the beginning of our work and hope to be able to reach further supporters for our great project. We are equally pleased We are pleased about the state capital’s trust in our important work.”
