It is up to the “builder” of Havre (Seine-Maritime), a man of “righteousness and convictions” but also the “gentleman” “of great kindness” that the people of Le Havre make tribute. Through a few words for some, long lines for others, many have already blackened the pages of the guest book, made available in the hall of the town hall since Sunday, September 6, 2020, to pay tribute to Antoine Rufenacht.

A visionary for his city

Mayor of the Cité Océane for 15 years, from 1995 to 2010, the politician who was also a deputy has visibly marked the hearts of the inhabitants of his city. The one who in particular had the reconstructed center classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site, supported the creation of the tramway, the new stadium and many cultural and sporting facilities receives tribute for his qualities as a “builder mayor” and “visionary for the city and its port ”.

“Thank you for what you have done for the renewal of Le Havre”, we can read. “Now we are proud of our city”, “it made us want to stay there”, we still write.

A tribute to this great man who changed the face of Le Havre. His achievements (…) have given shine to our city.

Kindness and elegance

But beyond his record at the town hall, it is also the personality of Antoine Rufenacht who will have marked the Havre. Many people salute “a man of great class.” “Your words so kind when we met you” have marked some when others keep a “touched memory (…) of an elegant and accessible approach by his kindness. “

The people of Le Havre also describe a “great respectful and respectable man”, thank him “for having been this great gentleman for Le Havre”. “Thank you for your righteousness, your humor, and for having worked all your life according to your convictions, without compromise” as well as “for having shown the true meaning of political commitment, of the general interest”, we read further.

Antoine Rufenacht’s funeral will take place on Thursday September 10 at 2:30 p.m. in Saint-Joseph Church in Le Havre.
