Mayor Alex Char Urges Creation of Security Secretariat in Barranquilla to Combat Extortion

During the installation of the Barranquilla Council sessions, Mayor Alex Char insisted on the creation of the Security Secretariat in the Atlantic capital. As an immediate shock measure against extortion, the president will rely on the work of two retired generals from the National Police.

Generals Mariano Botero and Julio César González are two seasoned retired officers who know perfectly well the impact of extortion in Barranquilla and will join Mayor Alex Char’s team.
“You go through the center and see all the merchants with their curtains down. And every day extortion, extortion and extortion. And you find out that families save five, seven, ten million pesos, open a store, business, and two weeks later they are already calling them to charge them for a vaccine every month,” said Alex Char, mayor of Barranquilla.

The president took office on Friday, December 29, 2023 and assumed office for the third time. The mayor spoke with Noticias Caracol about what the priority issues will be during his term and announced the construction of a new boardwalk in the southeast of the city.

Regarding the issue of the high costs of electricity bills, Alex Char said that “this energy issue in the Colombian Caribbean, not only in Barranquilla, has been an absolute tragedy.”

“We will sit down in the first days with our congressmen and we will demand this fair concern that all Caribbean people have with these rates, which are not set by us, but rather through the CREG and the national government, generation costs, losses and others that end up destroying the pockets of the people of Barranquilla and the entire Caribbean,” he said.

The mayor of Barranquilla put on the table what his relationship with President Gustavo Petro will be like.

The head of state’s speech “is very similar to our ideas, to what we have also proposed, our government is going to be much more social than ever. We have talked about the energy transition and we align ourselves with the national government,” said Alex Char.

Finally, Alejandro Char assured that he will make the best effort because “finally Barranquilla, the Atlantic and the Caribbean supported the president. I don’t think he’s in any attitude other than wanting all of these communities to live well. “We are going to do everything so that this goes well and is a fluid relationship.”
