In the midst of the growing housing crisis in the five boroughs, Mayor Adams presents a new plan to create 100,000 new homes to alleviate the city’s serious housing crisis and the shelter system.
The proposed reforms, which Adams announced in remarks at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, represent his administration’s most comprehensive and ambitious attempt to address the housing shortage, which has been worsening for decades.
One proposal would allow apartment buildings up to five stories high to be built atop laundromats, warehouses and other single-story commercial buildings in some neighborhoods outside Manhattan.
“Next week, @NYCPlanning will begin the process to advance this proposal. These new rules will help us create an additional 100,000 new homes.
“In addition to our current housing projections, this is enough new housing for a quarter of a MILLION New Yorkers,” the mayor wrote in a social media message.
