A few days before early voting begins for this month’s primaries in New York, Mayor Eric Adams decided to take sides in this election and this Monday announced his support for Governor Kathy Hochul.
Several media echoed the announcement that took place in the morning during a campaign event in Manhattan.
“Governor Hochul has been a true ally, working on behalf of all New Yorkers, and has achieved real results,” Adams said in a statement released by local media.
“We share the same priorities: improving public safety, access to child care and housing. I look forward to continuing that work in the years to come with the Governor and collaborating to take this city and state to another level,” Adams said.
According to the specialized media outlet Politico, with this move the mayor “breaks a long precedent: (Eric) Adams is now the first mayor of New York City to support a first-time gubernatorial candidate from his own party in the midst of century”.
In statements quoted on his Spectrum News portal, Hochul thanked Adams for his support: “Since we took office, we have worked together to address some of the city’s most pressing issues, from public safety to housing. and get our economy back on track,” Hochul said.
“Mayor Adams and I will continue to do things for New Yorkers, and I am honored to have your support,” she added.
According to analysts, Adams’ endorsement may help Hochul win more votes from the Latino and African-American electorate.
It is estimated that in New York 18% of the Democratic electorate is made up of voters of Hispanic origin. Most are concentrated in the five borough area.
