Mayonnaise Brand Banned in Oman After Deadly Food Poisoning Outbreak Linked to Bon Tum

Muscat: Mayonnaise brand banned in Oman after causing food poisoning that killed one person in Saudi Arabia and hospitalized 75 people. Local media reported that the Food Safety and Quality Center has issued a warning about the health risk associated with Bon Tum mayonnaise. These are fenced off at the borders to reduce the risk of accidents caused by this. The authorities have also ordered to stop the supply of this brand of mayonnaise to wholesalers and retailers in the country. The Center for Food Safety and Quality has been leading activities including comprehensive market surveys in collaboration with local authorities including the Consumer Protection Authority. In a statement, the center also said that the authorities were asked to remove these from the shops as soon as possible.

As a precautionary measure, the purchase or consumption of Bon Tum Brand mayonnaise packets is strictly prohibited. As a security precaution it is advised to ignore all available packages even if the expiry date is not reached. It was clear from the health department’s investigation that the bacterium Clostridium botulinum in mayonnaise was responsible for the poisoning in Saudi Arabia. Because of this, the authorities have closed the company including the manufacturing plant.
