Creepy find on the beach: Kiefer causes some discussion

The biologist Dr. Mark Benecke regularly shares submissions from his followers on his Instagram and Facebook profiles. They send him photos of special finds and ask the biologist for his opinion. Benecke then shares the photos with his community and lets users on social media puzzle over the origin of some of the finds. The biologist shared a curious find at the beginning of September 2024.

“Hello Dr. Benecke, we found the pine photographed next to it on the beach while on holiday in Zandvoort,” the photographer announced. As she goes on to say, she handed the jaw over to the police immediately after finding it. Nevertheless, she was interested in the history of the jaw: “Can you say approximately how long it was in the sea? The jawbone appears to have been washed away by the sea, but the tooth appears to be in fairly good condition.” Also one Dentist found bones thousands of years old – possibly that of a Neanderthal.

Instagram users puzzle over jaw found on beach

After the post, Instagram users puzzled over the origin of the jaw. “The tooth looks very worn out. Personal data may still exist, but the entire jaw has been worn away by sand over the years. The tooth has also been rounded, maybe we can find out something with the DNA,” wrote one. Another user stated that “identification via tooth status probably no longer works with such a tooth.”

One user suggested that the jaw could come from the so-called “Doggerland”, a region in the southern part of the North Sea basin. “From there, things keep washing up on the North Sea coast. “Maybe the jaw is a few 1,000 years old,” she suspected. One user reported that she also had a similar model at home. “There are always pieces from doctor’s offices,” was the answer to the question as to why the jaw had not been reported to the police.
