Who hasn’t experienced it? pain during menstruation? All women who have at least menstruation never experience abdominal pain or cramps during menstruation.
Menstrual pain is actually normal, because during menstruation, the lining of the uterus is breaking down. However, women need to be alert when abdominal pain during menstruation interferes with daily activities and requires analgesics. Such conditions can be signs of diseases of the reproductive organs or called gynecological diseases endometriosis.
What is endometriosis?
The endometrium is the inner lining of your uterus. This tissue is lost during the menstrual period. When a woman menstruates, these layers detach from the uterine wall and exit through the vagina.
According to Dr. Pojianto, Sp. ESpecialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Mayapada Hospital Tangerang (MHTG), Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterine wall grows in other parts of the body.
When this tissue grows in other organs such as the ovaries, intestines, bladder and urinary tract, or even in the chest, it can cause symptoms that affect the patient’s quality of life.
Endometriosis usually presents as red patches that attach to other organs outside the uterus. This tissue is sensitive to hormones and can become inflamed during the menstrual cycle.
Endometriosis can cause cysts on the ovaries, spots on the surface of the organs, and can even stick deeper (deeply infiltrated), adhesions with other organs and causes scar tissue in the body.
“Endometriosis is also often a cause of infertility or difficulty conceiving in women,” said Dr. Pojianto, Sp.OG.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
There are many associated symptoms endometriosis. The main symptom is pain or tenderness. It can usually be felt in the abdomen, pelvic area, and lower back. Although endometriosis is a common condition, not everyone will experience symptoms.
Doctor Setyo Hermanto, Sp.OGDoctor of Obstetrics and Gynecology from Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta (MHJS) explained: “Sometimes, a female patient may suffer from endometriosis without symptoms and is not known until she is found during another exam or during an exam. It was discovered that she had endometriosis, but it is still in the early stages. This disease, 60-80%, causes difficulties in getting pregnant in women, so it needs adequate treatment.

So what should be done when endometriosis symptoms occur?
Explained by dr. Caroline Tirtajasa, Sp.OG, KFER, Doctor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, specialist in fertility and reproductive hormones from Mayapada Hospital Kuningan (MHKN), endometriosis is a disease that greatly interferes with the quality of life, causes prolonged pain, disturbances in the menstrual cycle and can cause infertility so that women find it difficult to get pregnant.
«And it must be known that endometriosis can be experienced by women starting from adolescence up to those who are already in menopause. So it is very important immediately verify go to the doctor when you feel the symptoms, “said Dr. Caroline Tirtajasa, Sp.OG, KFER, who is also a laparoscopic surgeon.
Also, she said, “The doctor will then do an obstetric examination and a transvaginal ultrasound which obviously doesn’t hurt, maybe it’s just uncomfortable, so the patient doesn’t have to worry or be afraid.”
After the diagnosis of endometriosis, treatment can be with hormonal drugs and in some cases surgery or surgery is required ”.
“For patients who are afraid of surgery, it can now be done using a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) technique. Laparoscopy uses the help of a laparoscope – a thin telescopic rod with a camera at the end – to examine the abdominal and pelvic cavities without opening them fully, “said Dr. Caroline Tirtajasa, Sp.OG, KFER.
Laparoscopic surgery requires only a small incision which is usually 0.5cm-1cm in size. The benefit is that patients experience less pain after surgery, recover faster, and can also return to normal activities more quickly.
So, don’t hesitate to go to the doctor right away if you experience symptoms that indicate endometriosis. The sooner it is diagnosed and treated correctly by a specialist, the better for your health
