Moldovan President Maya Sandu’s dog defied protocol by biting visiting Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen on the hand, Moldovan media reported, Reuters reported.
According to media reports, the incident happened when the two were walking in the courtyard of the presidential residence and Van der Bellen tried to pet the dog, called Codrut.
Sandu apologized in English and explained that the dog was frightened by the large number of people nearby. Van der Bellen appeared with a bandaged hand at his next meeting with the speaker of the Moldovan parliament.
Talks in Chisinau, attended by Van der Bellen and Slovenia’s president, focused on the desire of Moldova, which lies between Ukraine and Romania, to join the European Union.
Sandhu, who took the dog in after it was hit by a car, posted photos on social media with her pet and the two presidents.
