May Day protests across France, protests against pension reforms, clashes with police
On May 1st, protests were held across France against the reform of the pension system. At least 108 police officers were injured in clashes with participants, according to Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin.
According to the Interior Ministry, a total of 782,000 people took part in the protests across the country. In Paris it was 112,000. But the trade union CGT said the number of participants was three times that number.
While the protests were largely peaceful, some extremist groups in Paris, as well as Lyon, Toulouse and Nantes, took dangerous actions, including throwing Molotov cocktails and fireworks. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons.
Interior Minister Dharmanan said 291 people were arrested nationwide.
In France, President Emmanuel Macron is promoting reform of the pension system, and a bill was enacted in April. The pensionable age has been raised from 62 to 64.
The bill has been the subject of violent protests since January.
