May Day parade suspended for second consecutive year – 2024-04-18 06:36:13

Once again showing the seriousness of the current economic crisis in Cuba, the Castro government suspended for the second consecutive year the traditional May Day parade, held during International Workers’ Day in the Plaza de la Revolución, in Havana.

According to an official statement shared in the Cuban news, the fuel shortage makes it impossible to move so many people to the propaganda event in Havana, so, instead of holding the traditional march, the event will be held at the Anti-imperialist Tribune, located in front of the United States Embassy.

As in 2023, the general secretary of the Cuban Workers’ Union (CTC), Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, asked the workers to travel to the meeting point by any means they could.

The event will be difficult this year, because unlike previous celebrations, the regime will not offer transportation or snacks, something that used to characterize political events in the past.

In that sense, only residents of municipalities close to the José Martí Anti-imperialist Tribune located in front of the Havana boardwalk were summoned, that is, residents of the municipalities of Plaza, Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, Cerro and the nearby areas of Playa .

“There we will ratify that the Cuban working class will continue to pay particular attention to everything related to the recovery of the economy, efficiently taking advantage of the resources we have to increase the supply of goods and services,” added the official.

The Anti-imperialist Tribune was inaugurated in 2000, and covers approximately 13,000 square meters. While this area may seem impressive, it pales in comparison to the 72,000 square meters available in the Plaza de la Revolución, named as such since 1959.

The cancellation of an event as traditional as the May Day parade, one of the regime’s main propaganda acts, is proof that the situation on the island is much worse than the authorities make it seem.

And, despite the marked shortage that has been affecting the country for years, the regime had not spared costs when it came to putting a good image before the international community.
