NEW YORK – Jumaane Williams is the public defender in New York City. Under the city’s charter, he would take over as acting mayor if Eric Adams stepped aside or was fired by the governor.
Williams, a former city council member, has served as the city’s public advocate since winning a special election in 2019.
He ran for governor of New York in 2022, but lost to Kathy Hochul.
Adams is expected to face federal charges, sources say. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Community organizer from Brooklyn
Before that, he was a member of the New York City Council representing District 45. Williams is a first-generation Brooklynite of Grenadian descent. She graduated from the public school system, where she overcame the challenges of Tourette syndrome and an ADHD diagnosis to earn a master’s degree from Brooklyn College.
A Working Families Party-endorsed Democrat, he began his career as a community organizer at the Greater Flatbush Beacon School and later served as executive director of NYS Tenants & Neighbors. There, she fought for affordable and income-sensitive housing throughout New York City and the state.
In the New York City Council, where he represented District 45, Williams supported police reform legislation. He supported the Community Safety Act, which reformed the City Police Department by ending the abuse of the Stop, Question, and Frisk policy in communities of color and creating the Office of the Chief – NYPD investigation to investigate illegal and unethical behavior.
