After the May bank holiday, there were plenty of interesting discussions in the Dáil. There were mentions of Mexican imports, political scandals, and imported wood chips from Brazil and peat from Latvia. Matt Shanahan of the Regional Independents mentioned the lack of government commitment to the southeast compared to Dublin and Cork, causing John Paul Phelan to announce that he would not be running for the next election. The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, also found himself in hot water over his comments about a “kangaroo court” in the Dáil. All in all, it was an eventful session, with Richard Boyd-Barrett and Paul Murphy even criticizing RTÉ’s decision to broadcast four hours of live coverage of the “so-called coronation” of King Charles on Saturday.
