(ANSA) – BARI, 01 MAY – “Today we celebrate the feast of those who do not give up, as Giuseppe Di Vittorio, whose name is engraved on the plaque under which we meet every year in old Bari on this day, taught us. Today it is the celebration of those who do not give up on deaths at work, which are still too many and unfortunately on the rise.” The mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, said this, celebrating the May 1st holiday in front of the plaque commemorating the Apulian trade unionist Giuseppe Di Vittorio. “Today – he added – is the celebration of those who do not give in to slavery in the workplace, without protection or rights; today is the celebration of those who do not give up when faced with the request for a blank letter of resignation. Today is the celebration of those who know that the plan for differentiated autonomy is the first step towards returning to discrimination and differences between workers from the South and workers from the North”. “Opposing all this is the meaning of our presence here today, under the name of Giuseppe Di Vittorio, who fought for workers’ rights all his life.” “Today, here – he concluded – we are called to renew a strong commitment on these issues, against discrimination, against deaths at work, against extreme precariousness, against the fragmentation of our country. We owe it to Giuseppe Di Vittorio but we owe it especially to the children of this land, ours, who cannot afford to go back”. (HANDLE).
