A new year remembering the long struggles of the workers, forged with blood and sweat.
Because for workers, nothing is easy for us.
We commemorate the martyrs of Chicago, workers who gave their lives to get some rights, including an eight-hour work day, and thanks to these and other struggles and demands carried out by workers, we have labor rights that allow us to have better working conditions, as well as social security policies.
Each conquest comes after hundreds of hours of planning, anxiety, nerves, dialogue, sleeping badly, hours we leave our family and our own well-being, to achieve it.
At ASSE we come from 2 years of pandemic, where workers knew how to respond and bring us to fruition without abandoning our fight for a minute.
We were on the front line dealing with the pandemic. But in turn, from the first day that the pandemic broke out, in each center we workers have been dedicated to developing protocols and care mechanisms for health workers so that they can respond to the emergency on the front line.
Without forgetting our social streak. Because not only the unions, and particularly the FFSP, are here for union struggles, we are also in the fight for rights. We also knew how to sustain and support initiatives that would provide solutions to the popular pots, picnic areas and dining rooms, of neighbors who, concerned about the crisis in their neighborhood, also stepped forward by providing solutions to the residents of the area.
Where the face and hand of the State are absent, the workers, the union movement, are all there to provide answers.
The workers of Uruguay are committed to our history and the fight against injustice and inequalities.
And we only do that with committed militancy. And we highlight the militancy in the interior of the country, because it is much more complex and solitary than in the capital. Many times the social springs inside become more complex with other issues, and the struggle for issues that are so sensitive that they should not be tainted with other issues becomes more difficult.
The conquests are not only facts of the present, but they lay the foundations to advance in new conquests.
That is why I invite you to participate in this new generation of militants who continue to believe that a better world is possible. The possibility of change is in our hands, because we do not conceive of a society where many have little and few have much.
May 1st is a day of universal strike, it is a day of encounter and embrace for all the workers of the world, I encourage you to be forgers of the society of the future.
And in terms of struggle, today we are facing a neoliberal advance that will have a strong impact on social security.
And they are not sticks in the wheel for the government, it is a stick in the wheel in increasing the retirement age, in cuts in social security benefits and in the privatization of pensions.
