May 1 defies Corona: dozens of demos registered across Saxony

Because of Corona, the unions will not hold their May rallies on Friday. In contrast, there are registrations of political assemblies all over Saxony.

Leipzig – For the first time in their recent history, the unions will forego their traditional May rallies on Friday. Because of corona! But the streets and squares will not remain empty on “Labor Day”. There are dozens of registrations from political assemblies all over Saxony.

One thing in advance: The Saxons will have to do without traditional May festivals, witch fires and other popular amusements this Friday. The Corona Protection Ordinance strictly prohibits such collections. With one exception: Political meetings can be held under strict infection control requirements.

And parties, associations, initiatives and private individuals want to make extensive use of this on May 1, as a TAG24 survey among the Saxon counties and independent cities showed.

A total of six rallies have been registered in Leipzig. An alliance of systemically important workers wants to demonstrate in front of the opera for higher wages from 10 a.m. A citizen demonstration for the observance of fundamental rights is to take place in front of the Nikolaikirche from 3.30 p.m. And left-wing politician Juliane Nagel (41) wants to march from Connewitz “combative to May Day” with her faithful at noon.

There are also six registrations in Dresden – from the left, two initiatives and three private individuals. However, all meetings were registered in miniature format with numbers of participants between eight and 50.

The AfD and an initiative against the right want to be present with information stands in downtown Chemnitz. The left is planning a 5-man demo. The district of Görlitz reported “around a dozen” May meetings. Most would address fundamental rights, explained a spokeswoman. Demo registrations are also available for Pirna (AfD), Kamenz (Left), Borna (AfD) and Plauen. In Oschatz the innkeepers want to demonstrate with empty chairs in front of the doors.

What actually took place in the end and under what conditions was unclear last night. Almost all city and district administrations were still examining the relevant exemptions and notices.
