Maximou on the Gerapetritis-Fidan meeting: “We are neither naive, nor are we going to expect anything, which is particularly optimistic” –

A brief account of his meeting Giorgos Gerapetritis with the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidanthe government representative informed the political editors, essentially stating that the logic of the “positive agenda” will continue, but without great expectations on the big issues.

Specifically, to a question from Documentonews about the areas of discussion that will exist in the next period, at the moment when the Turkish side, on Friday, again put its “holistic” approach to the meeting, which also touches on issues of sovereignty, Pavlos Marinakis noted that ” I cannot tell you what we can expect from the Turkish side. I can answer you for the Greek side, for the Greek Government, which is not going to back down on any of what we call “red” lines. No concession on sovereignty issues. It was a productive meeting, where the progress regarding Greek-Turkish relations was assessed. We invest in continuing the dialogue. Dialogue, however, does not mean retreat. Dialogue means assertion. We will continue to make our own demands. Our country is not going to discuss any other difference than the only one, which is the definition of EEZ and continental shelf”.

At the same time, he added that “from then on, however, very important issues were discussed, what we call a “positive agenda” and a series of developments, which have led to a much better management of immigration, with the assistance of the neighboring country as well. . From then on, each meeting will be evaluated individually. And we say it again, we are neither naive, nor are we going to expect anything, which is particularly optimistic. But, yes, we believe that this prolonged dialogue process has only to offer, given the fact that our country does not accept any concession, just as no previous government of the country accepted any concession”.

All this while in the meeting (8/11) with Giorgos Gerapetritis, Hakan Fidan developed all the demands of the Turkish side that touch on issues of Greek sovereignty. In particular, he spoke about the division of the Aegean, referred to the minority as “our expatriates in Greece” and cut the bridges in Cyprus, pointing out that “the federation model has been proven not to be valid”.
