Maximou: No plan for substitute teachers regarding maternity and child-rearing leaves (Video) –

The government has no plan to tackle the unequal treatment of substitute teachers’ maternity and parental leave, at a time when the European Commission is calling for this issue to be resolved.

In relation to his question documentonews in informing the political editors on whether the government will solve this very serious issue, as these women workers are only entitled to 3.5 months of parental leave after giving birth, the government representative said that “I know the matter. The Mitsotakis government is the one that has given the most support of any post-political government to the new mother, to the working mother. In this country, unfortunately, there were two types of mothers, all the rest and the self-employed and the peasant women. And in fact they received an amount, not even 1,000 euros, while now they receive the minimum wage, times 9 plus the birth allowance. That is, an amount that reaches a total of 10,000 euros and depending on the child, it can be a little more, because the birth allowance is added to the second, third and fourth child respectively. The regime governing substitute teachers is different from that governing all other teaching staff for this and it was not possible for this increase in maternity leave allowance to be extended. I understand the concern and requests. At the moment I cannot say anything more, because there is nothing from the relevant ministries”

In fact, he added that “What I want to say is that they were not exempted, that is, it is not that something was legislated and they were exempted. What was legislated could be applied to all these categories, which I mentioned to you. Anyway, as you rightly said, it’s not that they’re not getting something, it’s that they’re getting something that’s less over time. However, the criteria by which this allowance is given has to do with the employment relationship. For example, permanent teachers, mothers that is, teachers have a different employment relationship than substitute teachers. It’s something that I imagine if the co-competent ministries have something to say because it’s also a financial issue, we’ll get back to it.”

In short, the government has nothing concrete to say to working teachers who are asking for equality in maternity and child-rearing leave. All this, in fact, at a time when government officials constantly say that dealing with the demographic issue is the government’s absolute priority.
