Why not? We use it alone and by being a bit smart about energy, less investment is required and that saves us all money.
There is enough/too much electricity in the middle of the day, why can’t we all do laundry, dishwasher, car charging, etc. in the middle of the day. Many of these devices can be turned on/off with a timer or remotely.
If we just started doing this en masse, just a change in behavior, then there would be a much smaller problem.
If you find that too much work, a battery can help you, because then you don’t have to think about what you turn on and when.
A battery is certainly not useless at the moment, it helps to maximize your own consumption, which means that you can use your own green energy. If you are not interested in that and are only interested in the financial picture, you can charge it at times when the electricity is spot cheap and supply it back around 8 am (morning and evening) when there is always a price peak. This way you can earn money with your battery.
When you come to the discussion about cobalt, home batteries are usually of the LFP type, without cobalt and therefore more durable and safer.
