The story of the Máxima brooch tonight takes us back to the nineteenth century. In 1879 Emma got married to Willem III and of course a wedding also includes gifts. Emma receives a diamond hairpin, also called an egret, from her sister-in-law Sophie. The design consists of 12 diamond sprigs, with small brilliant cut diamonds at the ends collar have been set. Thanks to a special attachment, the diamonds hang ‘freely’ from the twigs, so that they move smoothly with the wearer. Sophie’s special gift shows craftsmanship and also fits well with nineteenth-century fashion. Women wore their long curls and richly decorated hairpins were in high demand. Yet Emma is seen only once with the heron. She wore the jewel in a special moment. Shortly after her husband’s death, Emma posed in mourning clothes, with the heron in her hair. Real, but not too sumptuous given the sad circumstances. (Source: Edwin Fellner from Dutch Royal Jewels)

After Queen Juliana and Princess Margriet, Máxima also started wearing the jewel in 2011. Since then, the little egret has been worn publicly by her six times as a brooch or hairpin.
