The retailer SIA “Maxima Latvija” plans to adapt the eight stores so that they can be visited by residents without a Covid-19 vaccination or disease certificate, Liene Dupate-Ugule, the communications manager of “Maxima Latvija”, admitted to LETA.

She explained that there are 173 stores in the Maxima network throughout Latvia. Currently, 86% of them, or 148 Maxima stores, continue to operate in the “red” mode and are also open to the public without a Covid-19 vaccination or disease certificate.

In contrast, 14% or 25 stores operate in the “green” mode and can only be visited with a vaccination or disease certificate.

According to the emergency order, shops with a total public space of more than 1,500 square meters may only operate in “green” mode.

“Ever since the discussion on the possibility of introducing restrictions on the operation of larger format stores, we have been opposed to such restrictions, stating that food, medicine and essential services must be available to all residents of Latvia, regardless of the size of the store,” explains Dupate-Ugule. , adding that the trader has also expressed his position in government working groups and responsible ministries.

Maxima Latvija is considering ways to ensure the availability of these essential products in accordance with national restrictions and epidemiological requirements. Therefore, the adaptation of eight larger Maxima stores to the “red” mode has now started. As Dupate-Ugule explained, this will be a physical adaptation of stores with practical solutions.

According to Dupate-Ugule, the restrictions on the operation of larger format stores affect the regional shopping centers and small businesses outside Riga, which are located in these outlets.

“Especially in the regions, the density of basic goods and services is much lower and the population has limited access to basic services and goods,” said the trader’s spokeswoman.

The agency LETA has already reported that the television channel ReTV had noticed at the end of last year that several supermarkets that had been operating in the so-called “green” mode had switched to the “red” or epidemiologically unsafe mode. Among these stores was, among others, “Maxima XX” in Cēsis. The Minister of Health Daniels Pavļuts (AP) at the time even advised the television to turn to the police about the actions of such traffickers.

It has also been reported that the state of emergency declared in the country has been extended until 28 February due to the new omicron variant of Covid-19.

From November 15, only small convenience stores may operate in “unsafe mode” or without presenting Covid-19 certificates.

In addition to Covid-19 certificates, indoor sales services are available if the total public area of the visitors does not exceed 1,500 square meters and if there is a separate entrance. This is how grocery stores, medical supply stores, optical stores, animal feed stores, press outlets, and hygiene goods stores can operate.

At these points of sale, with the exception of pharmacies, the maximum number of visitors must be such as to provide at least 25 square meters of public indoor space per visitor. On the other hand, pharmacies that vaccinate against Covid-19 or issue test certificates require one person to provide at least 15 square meters of public space.
