Max Verstappen dominates Spielberg Sprint Shootout; Ferrari struggles, Mercedes faces setbacks

Although the conditions at Spielberg have changed, the name of the fastest man remains the same. Even in the sprint shootout, Max Verstappen managed to set the fastest time, clearly beating all his rivals, including his teammate. He settled in the lead with a lead of half a second.

Max Verstappen once again showed a sovereign performance, with which they will certainly be satisfied at Red Bull. This time they can fully enjoy themselves, as Sergio Pérez also managed to fulfill his role and qualified on the front row, albeit with a loss of 0.493 seconds.

However, the pair of Ferrari drivers did not compete with the Red Bulls today, as they did on Friday. The second row was occupied by Lando Norris, for whom the circuit in Spielberg really suited him, and also Nico Hülkenberg from Haas. On his behalf, let’s note that stewards will investigate his potentially dangerous exit from the pits when his car was airborne.

Ferrari finishes only in fifth and sixth place. Charles Leclerc can also be happy about that, since he was only one thousandth of a second away from the non-progressive sixteenth place in SQ1. Carlos Sainz didn’t have a problem-free day either. In the first part, the Spaniard complained about problems with the brakes, for which he spent most of the time in the garage. In the end, he only had one attempt, but he made it. In the end, the fact that Ferrari did not keep a sufficient number of fresh software for today could also underline the weaker result.

Leclerc could potentially lose another three positions. The commissioners are investigating him for blocking Oscar Piastri in SQ1.

The Aston Martins continue what they started on Friday, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll taking seventh and eighth. We still have Esteban Ocon and Kevin Magnussen in the top ten.

They have had a disastrous start to the day in Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton was unable to advance even from the first part, when the stewards canceled his time of 1:06.624 and later in the traffic he could not improve it. As if that wasn’t enough, at the end of SQ1, George Russell reported a hydraulic failure that could not be fixed in time.
