Reigning Formula One champion Max Verstappen believes the Las Vegas Grand Prix is ”99% show and 1% sport” and the drivers looked like clowns at the bombastic 30-minute opening ceremony on Wednesday night.
Max Verstappen: “I want to perform as well as possible this weekend, but the rest of the events don’t excite me at all. I don’t like all these shows, I don’t want to participate in them. Standing on stage, the racers look like clowns.
I understand perfectly well that this can be looked at from two sides – from the business side or from the sports side. So, I understand their point of view, but this is not my topic at all.
Track? The configuration didn’t seem particularly interesting to me. City roads are not very suitable for modern heavy vehicles, especially when grip on asphalt leaves much to be desired. It’s interesting to race with our cars when there are a lot of high-speed turns on the track, but here there are almost none.
Another problem is that there is a 12-hour time difference between Vegas and Abu Dhabi, where the stage will take place next week. In Vegas we actually live according to the Japanese schedule; here it’s almost a different day. I don’t really understand this. It’s very tiring. It makes no sense to have double rounds in such different time zones at the end of the season when everyone is tired.”
