Max Verstappen Claims 5th Consecutive Victory at 2023 FIA-F1 World Championship Round 10 Austrian GP

The final race of the 2023 FIA-F1 World Championship Round 10 Austrian GP was held at the Red Bull Ring on July 2nd, and Max Verstappen won his 5th consecutive victory this season and his 42nd victory in total with a pole-to-win. Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) finished in 18th place.

Due to a difference in tire strategy with other cars, it was not possible to lead all laps, but at the point of the last two laps, he had a huge 24-second lead over the trailing cars. In the final lap, he recorded the fastest lap of 1’07.012 and added the full amount of 26 points.

Charles Leclerc’s best second place finish of the season gave Ferrari its second podium finish of the season. Sergio Perez slipped into third place. He made a spectacular recovery from a mistake he made in qualifying where he was eliminated in Q2 in 15th place. Dedicated the W podium at the home race to the team.

Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), 3rd on the grid, lost time due to a 5-second penalty due to track limits and a clumsy pit stop. Finished in 4th place and dropped the rank. Lando Norris, who drove the greatly improved McLaren MCL60, followed in 5th place and was selected as Driver of the Day.

An action-packed day of racing saw at least eight drivers receive time penalties over track limits. One of them, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), continued to point out the track limits of other cars, and there was a scene where team representative Toto Wolff calmed him down, finishing in 7th, two positions down. His colleague George Russell followed in eighth place.

Fernando Alonso fought a solid race with no violations and won 6th place. Aston Martin scored double points as his team-mate Lance Stroll slipped into 10th place. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) was also one of the five-second penalties due to the track limits, but he still finished the race in ninth place.

The finals were contested by 71 laps of the 4318m course with a blackout at 22:00 Japan time on the 2nd (Sunday). Although it was raining nearby, the local Spielberg was sunny, and the formation lap of the championship point race started in dry conditions with an air temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a track surface of 32 degrees Celsius.

Official tire supplier Pirelli has introduced the softest range of compounds from C3 to C5. With the exception of the following three drivers who chose hard, all cars arrived on the grid wearing medium tires.

On the opening lap, Yuki Tsunoda collided with Esteban Ocon (Alpine) at the exit of Turn 1. The left wing tip plate of the front wing was damaged and scattered on the course, and at the following turn 4, it flew out into the gravel without being able to stop. A Safety Car (SC) was deployed to collect debris.

After reporting damage to the car, Yuki Tsunoda returned to the pits and replaced the wing and tires. He fell to the back of the line, but when he restarted on lap 4, he quickly regained position to 17th.

On lap 13, Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), who had just finished changing tires, stopped the car at Turn 3 with white smoke. Appears to be engine trouble. It was not possible to connect the good position of the 8th grid to the result.

Along with this, when the virtual safety car (VSC) was introduced, most of the grid except Red Bull and Yuki Tsunoda moved to change tires.

Ferrari, who tried to double stack, took more than 4 seconds to change tires for both cars, and Sainz, who entered the pit following Leclerc, was deprived of his position by Hamilton and Norris, and wondered why he did not stay out. exposed.

Yuki Tsunoda, who stayed out, moved up to 8th position on the 16th lap, but was affected by the contact on the 1st lap. After that, he slipped back and forth, and on lap 23 he made another pit stop, dropping to 15th, despite being on hard tyres.

From beginning to end, the race was marked by black and white flags and track limits.

Hamilton, who became the first penalty after Norris reported a lane violation over the radio, continued to ask about lane violation penalties to other cars, probably out of frustration, and Wolff said, “Lewis, I know the car is bad. Please drive. I want you to concentrate.”

Yuki Tsunoda was the track limiter with the most. After receiving five seconds for the fourth track limit, he received an additional 10 seconds penalty for leaving the track seven times without justification.

Outside of track limits, Ocon was handed a five-second penalty for an unsafe release on Logan Sargent (Williams) in the pitlane.

Nick de Vries (AlphaTauri) also received a five-second penalty for driving Magnussen into the gravel in the middle of the battle.

Lap leader Verstappen, who stayed out at the timing of VSC, changed to hard tires on lap 24. He returned to the track in 3rd place, overtook Leclerc on lap 35 to retake the lead and set the fastest lap to take the checkered flag.
