Christian Horner noticed last weekend that Max Verstappen was sharper than usual. The Red Bull Racing driver was able to break the record for the most wins in a row and, according to Helmut Marko, there was some nervousness involved. Horner is particularly proud of the fact that this record shows that the team continues to perform at the top of its game. Reliability also does not seem to play a role for the Austrian racing stable for the time being.
The Grand Prix weekend at Monza ended up being special for Verstappen. After his victory in the Netherlands, the record for most wins in a row was equaled and this record could be broken in Italy. Marko noted that the Red Bull driver was a bit nervous during the race weekend, which the Austrian said was not normally the case. “I wouldn’t say he was nervous, but I would say you could definitely feel his focus was razor sharp, more than usual,” Horner told international media.
“You could see it definitely meant something to him,” the Red Bull team boss continues. Verstappen has indicated several times that records do not affect him, but Horner in turn indicates that it really does something to the two-time world champion. The Brit himself is also proud of the performance of the team and its driver. “Getting that one-two and that Max is alone with the most consecutive Formula 1 victories, namely ten victories, is quite impressive.”
Red Bull adviser Marko is not so concerned with Verstappen’s record. “For me personally it was even more special to achieve the hundredth victory as a team (in Canada this year, ed.), but it’s fantastic for Max.” The Austrian thinks that Verstappen can now let go of the tension that came with achieving the record. “Now he’s got it, so I think it’s a little bit more relaxed for the next few races.”
Horner: ‘The team has done a good job in that area’
In addition to the fact that Verstappen has managed to book ten victories in a row, all fourteen races this season are in the name of a Red Bull driver. “Whether it’s reliability, luck, strategy, speed, a pit stop, the weather, there are so many elements that come into play. You have to be able to continue to perform at your peak.’ Reliability seems to be the only element that can stop Red Bull, but for now the car seems unbreakable. “There have been some issues here and there that he has had to manage, particularly in the first race in Bahrain, but the car has proved robust. The team has done a good job in that area,” concludes Horner.
