After the all-star break, the final phase of the regular season will begin in the NBA in the coming days. Many teams are fighting for the best possible position for the playoffs, in which we will most likely also see the Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks. Both have had a good season so far and will face each other on the night from Friday to Saturday. Kick-off is at 3:00 a.m. at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, our prediction for this game is below Jazz versus Maverick’s tip.
As neighbors in the table, both teams are among the best teams in the Western Conference. Utah currently ranks fourth with a record of 36 wins and 22 losses, with Dallas right behind them in fifth. The Mavericks have accumulated 35 wins and 24 losses so far and are absolutely on course for the playoffs. Both teams shouldn’t miss the direct qualification for the postseason, but there won’t be much going up either.

Jazz Form & Balance Check
Utah is once again one of the better teams in the West this season, even if it’s not up to the dominant status of last season. Nevertheless, the Jazz have been in good form recently and only lost in the last game before the All-Star Weekend for the first time after six wins in a row. In the game before the break, Utah played LeBron James’ Lakers, who secured a hard-fought 106-101 win. Despite the defeat, Donovan Mitchell presented himself in top form again and scored a whopping 37 points.
Reluctant separation from Ingles
Despite the good season so far, there are some construction sites for the Jazz. Above all, the defense, which has recently weakened enormously and should be improved by the trade deadline. However, this was only partially successful. With Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Juancho Hernangomez two useful role players came, but neither are known for their defense. Still, it was a good deal for Utah as they got rid of the hugely popular but long-term injured Joe Ingles in return. This freed up a place in the squad for players who are really fit for action.

Mavericks Form & Record Check
This year, the Mavericks want to get past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since the sensational championship in 2011. In the last two years there it was against the Clippers, so the Mavs are slowly coming under pressure. Because in order to keep superstar Luka Dončić in Dallas in the long term, you need a positive development. The previous regular season is a certain step forward in this respect, but it only gets really interesting in the playoffs.
Porzingis has to go
Before the All-Star Break, the Mavs were in strong form, winning six of their last seven games. In the last game with the New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas won 125:118, Dončić was once again the outstanding man with a total of 49 points. Also in attendance were newcomers Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans, who arrived just before the deadline from the Washington Wizards. In return, Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick went the opposite way. So the Porzingis project ended in Dallas, and the big man never got beyond the status of an eternal promise.

In the Jazz, Mitchell and Gay are ailing and therefore doubtful, but both could be fit in time. On the other hand, the hospital is much fuller, the Mavericks are still worried about Pinson, Ntilikina, Burke, Chriss and Bullock. Hardaway Jr., on the other hand, is sure to be out, the guard should only intervene again in the playoffs with a foot injury. Dinwiddie could therefore take Brunson’s place in the starting five and allow the guard to return to sixth-man duty.
Jazz – Mavericks head-to-head & stats
Since 2000, there have been 77 direct duels between Utah and Dallas. The overall record speaks for the Mavs, who were able to get 42 wins. Utah won 35 times. However, the Jazz were able to win the first duel of the season against the Mavericks.
- 77 duels since 2000
- Mavs won 42, Jazz 35
- The first duel this season went to Utah
Jazz – Mavericks Tip
Everything in this matchup points to an even game. Both teams are roughly equal on paper as neighbors in the table and have each won six of their last seven games. Only because of the home advantage we would believe the jazz a narrow victory here.
We also believe in another strong game from Luka Dončić. The Mavs guard is once again in impressive form and has scored at least 45 (!) points in three of his last four games. We rely on at least 30 points from the Slovenian against the weak Utah defense.
