In June 1993 it was published North south west east, the second album of 883 and the last one written and realized by Max Pezzali and Mauro Repetto together. In Italy the album sold one million and 300 thousand copies and made the 883 the pop phenomenon of the moment, yet the following year, at the height of success, Repetto decided to leave the band. Over time, many began to wonder what happened to “the blond of 883”, the one who danced and squirmed on stage while Pezzali sang. Various urban legends circulated about him, such as those according to which he was ill or had become involved in shady rounds: but above all the one according to which he had ended up wearing the Goofy costume at the Disneyland Paris amusement park.
Today Repetto is 54 years old, he has written a book on the history of the 883 and he really works at Disneyland, but as an executive. In the past he had told on a few occasions that about the story of Goofy there was none of it true: in a recent interview given to the journalist Fabio De Luca on Republic he said however that of the many urban legends circulating about him, that is “the only one I really want to deny!”.
Repetto was born in Genoa in 1968 but grew up in Pavia, where he met Pezzali, a schoolmate. The two began writing songs and performing together. In 1989 they participated in the program “1, 2, 3 Jovanotti” with the pseudonym of I Pop (a play on words between “hip hop” and pop music), and in 1991 at the Castrocaro Festival with “Non me la menare”, which became the first song by They killed Spider-Man, the band’s first album, which came out in 1992 and was immediately a huge success. Not even a year after the release of North south west east however Repetto abandoned the 883. “I’m going to Miami on Monday and I don’t know if I’ll be back,” he said greeting Pezzali.
In the spring of 1994 Repetto went to Florida to meet Brandi Quinones, a model he had once glimpsed. Then he went to Los Angeles, where he wrote the script for a film, but was duped by an alleged lawyer who convinced him to open a production company for $100,000. After trying again with music in New York, he returned to Italy. In 1995, while Pezzali continued the career of 883 with new collaborators, Repetto released the album Cotton Candy Black, which hit neither the public nor the critics. Talking with Republicdescribed it as “a wedding cake that fell to the floor, and I tried without much luck to get back on its feet”.
It was at this point that Repetto went to Paris, where he began working at Disneyland (which was called Euro Disney until the end of 1994). The only costume he actually wore in his early days at the park was a cowboy one, he says, but he was a supervisor and not an entertainer for the audience. In the following years, he worked his way up the ranks of organizing special events at the park, eventually becoming a manager.
Among other things in the interview he says that when he began to work and live in France he understood that «anonymity was what he wanted most in the world», both at that moment and when he performed with the 883. «The excitement was more in creating a song, working on it and seeing it take shape. More that, than playing it in front of 100,000 people.”
In the last ten years of Repetto there has been somewhat more certain news, both because he participated in the video of the single “Always us” by Max Pezzali and J-Ax, and because he collaborated in the writing of two new songs for the album Max 20. In the summer of 2022 he also sang some songs on stage together with his former 883 partner, also at the San Siro. “The impact of the crowd was beautiful, sure, exciting,” she said. «But the greatest emotion was finding myself with Max, rediscovering the same dynamics and the same instantaneous understanding as when we were class mates».
On September 19, his book will be published, which is called I didn’t kill Spider-Man. The 883s and the pursuit of happiness and will be released by Mondadori. For 2024, however, the release of “They killed spider-man – the true story of the 883” is scheduled, the television series by director Sydney Sibilia currently in production. Talking with Republic, Repetto said that he had searched the Internet for images of the actor who will play his role (Matteo Oscar Giuggioli) and that he was “very reassured. It seems a cross between Fantozzi and Johnny Depp. As soon as I saw him I said to myself: “Ok, it’s me”».
