ODERZO – He is about to discuss his fourth degree thesis. The passion for knowledge, the curiosity in wanting to understand beyond the appearance and the awareness that learning improves have pushed a doctor from Oderzo to become a doctor again. It is not the love of titles or the ambition to reach who knows what records they have pushed Mauro Fioretti, 66 years old, to undertake this journey made of books, study, exams and even sacrifices. It is something else, indeed it is beyond. One thing is certain, no desire to fill in the gaps, because in the life of this doctor there is already so much: the working day in the clinic and at home, his wife Nadia, his three children Alessandro, Elisa and Michela and now also a nephew of three years. Of course the boys are now grown-ups and graduates, the eldest son in Economics and the two girls in Pharmacy, but when they were younger dad Mauro sat next to them on Sundays, each preparing his own university exam.
THE SURPRISE
“I’ve wondered several times why you study so much, comes from a normal family and so I think this drive is really all his” says Michela, 25, the youngest of the three brothers who wants to reward her father with a surprise. An article in the newspaper for the fourth degree, in this case in Food Sciences, which will discuss at the University of Florence next month. A title preceded, in a journey backwards, by the degree in Theology in 2016 obtained in Treviso, that in Philosophy in 2012 at the University of Ferrara and finally, indeed at the beginning, the degree in Medicine at the University of Padua in 1979.
“Dad goes in search of those things he cannot understand, he aspires to a knowledge that is not immediate, he wants to understand a different thought and above all I think he wishes to be an example for us children” says Michela who in telling this intimate and family story wants that the parent’s love of study is not only a model for them, but also for others. Of course he knows that making all this public will make his father embarrassed. “He is a reserved person, he does not like to show off and flaunt what he does – explains his daughter – I do not want to appear as a man who does extraordinary things, he is a simple soul, attentive to others, with an immense desire for knowledge and with an infinite curiosity to satisfy “. Curiosity and openness to the new that distinguish him in everything, even in his free time and on trips undertaken with the family. “In every place we went – he says – even when we were younger, he always tried to discover all that a place can offer”. And if there is a motto that belongs to Dr. Fioretti it is: “You never stop knowing”. In this supported by his wife who supports his particular pastime and by the children who are proud of him.
THE FUTURE
And since knowledge is infinite, Dr. Fioretti’s adventure will not stop at parchment number four. He has not yet told his family what he will want to do in the future. For now he will rest a little because preparing the thesis was challenging, but then there will be some other challenges waiting for him. “I know he already has something on his mind – says his daughter – he hasn’t revealed anything to us yet, he just said he’s getting information.” So new ideas and new energies to start an unprecedented journey into the maze of knowledge. Because after having plumbed the human body with its medical studies, ancient and modern thought through philosophical elaborations and having explored the inscrutable through theology, it will certainly find interesting areas to satiate its infinite desire to feed the mind. But in the midst of so much ingenuity and determination, there is one thing that will surprise him: his daughter’s unexpected idea of making her story public to serve as an example. In the series, it’s never too late.
