In a statement published on Tuesday, September 14, the Ministry of Health wanted to be reassuring as the reopening of the borders approached. Maurice, being placed on the list of Very High Risk Countries, le ministère de la Santé affirme que « Mauritius will reopen its borders on the 1st of October 2021 with one of the highest full vaccination rate in Africa ».

According to the Ministry of Health, the vaccination program and health management have resulted in “a very low number of hospitalizations – an average of just over 3% of patients hospitalized in the last 28 days.”

The ministry also points out that the infection rate “is being closely managed and that the recent peak has declined steadily over the past two weeks.”

Deemed to be “very high” risk by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Maurice was placed on the list of Very High Risk Countries, Monday, September 13.

The CDC recommends avoiding traveling to countries now designated as “Level 4: Very high Covid-19,” the highest level of alert.

In addition, the vaccination of under 18s should begin at the end of September.
