Mauritania: 5 years in prison for ex-president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz – AGP

LIBREVILLE, December 5, 2023 (AGP) – Former Mauritanian president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, was sentenced, Monday, November 4, 2023, to 5 years in prison by a court in Nouakchott, according to international media.

Since January, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has been on trial for having abused his power in order to amass a fortune. On this subject, the Court only held against him illicit enrichment and money laundering. He received 5 years of imprisonment.

Detained since January 24, 2023, after spending several months in detention in 2022, former President Mohamed Aziz, aged 66, becomes one of the rare former heads of state in Africa who is convicted of illicit enrichment in the exercise of power.
