The new “blue” coach, 51, replaces Frank Lampard who took charge of the team on an interim basis after a turbulent campaign, in which the West London team has had up to four coaches and it has remained outside of European competitions.
Chelsea, acquired last season by the American billionaire Todd Boehly, trusts the Pochettino’s experience in the Premierafter passing through Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, to take advantage of a squad full of stars and built with the help of a checkbook.
“He is a winning coach”
“Mauricio is a world-class manager with an outstanding career. We are looking forward to having him at the club,” said the Chelsea owners, who include, in addition to Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, José E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss.
They stressed that Pochettino is “recognized” for the “high energy” and “brightness” that characterize his teams, while he has earned a reputation for “helping young players” to develop “all their potential” within the framework of “a strong team spirit”.
Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul also praised the Argentine’s “experience, high standards of excellence, character and leadership” today.
“He is a winning coach who has worked at the highest level, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethics, tactical approach and commitment to development have made him an exceptional candidate,” the two managers added.
Pochettino’s last destination was Paris Saint-Germain, a team with which he won the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup.
