Maurel & Prom Gabon plans to plant 75,000 plants in Lambaréné – Journal du Gabon

The oil company intends to reforest, from April 25, the areas impacted by its activities in the province of Moyen Ogooué, the capital of which is Lambaréné.

A total of 1.7 billion CFA francs was financed for the planting of trees on the former airfield and runways of the Onal site located in the province of Moyen Ogooué, over a period of 5 years. the goal is to reforest this area impacted by the activities carried out by the company and eliminate theformer aerodrome in order to restore to nature its rights alienated by human activity. To carry out this operation, the oil company Maurel et Prom has retained the services of Precious Wood, a model in Gabon in terms of reforestation.

The company assured that no plants were imported to avoid disrupting the local ecosystem. The seeds of around thirty local plants were taken for development under human control. Among the emblematic trees of the Gabonese forest on the program for this reforestation, there are the Okoumé, the Tali, the Moubala, the Azobé, the Padouk,… all precious woods very popular on the international market.

For the smooth running of this program, local populations will participate, after a few months of on-the-job training. These young local residents now have scientific know-how in reforestation. Note that the experiment has been in progress for several months on the borders of Lake Ezanga where the oil operator has been exploiting black gold since the early 2000s on its Ezanga permit.
