Maubourguet. A bridge steeped in history

Power issues from the Middle Ages, with the payment of rights of way, bridges and footbridges are also steeped in history: “Each bridge is the witness of a hidden history”. The White Bridge has of course its own and its construction dates from 1882. History entrusted by Sylvain Dousseau.

The old bridge, the Fitte bridge

It is a very degraded wooden footbridge as indicated by the various documents of the XIX.

Its main role was to serve the Bouscarret mill from the Faubourg. A very old passage. In 1850 the miller of the mill owned the footbridge. This is the Fitte Bridge, a shortcut for pedestrians to get into town especially on market and fair days. The work deteriorates, Mr. Fitte sends requests to the municipal council to take wood in the forest to repair it but obtains a refusal. In February 1866, the footbridge was in very poor condition. The mayor and deputy, Anatole Desbons threatens to close it. But history rebound. The inhabitants of the suburb demand the construction of a tobacco shop. They addressed numerous complaints to the municipality and in March 1869 the authorization for restoration and construction was given. The tobacco shop will be run by Ms. Cams (to date it no longer exists).

The bridge becomes municipal

The urgent demand of the inhabitants who claim the right to be able to use the footbridge in complete safety is heard. On May 12, 1873, a compromise was found, Mr. Fitte ceded the bridge to the town, which had to ensure its maintenance. Nine years will pass without anything happening. Finally it will be a question of reconstruction. It will take place in 1882 using traditional methods of wood construction. The work completed a breach in the embankment threatens the new structure, it is the breach of Toureloure (to follow from oak wood to concrete for the Pont Blanc)
